The History of Rolex: From a London Office to Global Icon

How Hans Wilsdorf turned a small watch company into the most recognized luxury brand on the planet.

The History of Rolex: From a London Office to Global Icon

A Name Born in 1905

Rolex didn't start in Switzerland. In 1905, a 24-year-old German named Hans Wilsdorf founded a watch distribution company in London. He needed a brand name that was short, memorable, and easy to pronounce in any language. The word "Rolex" โ€” so the story goes โ€” came to him on the top deck of a horse-drawn bus.

The Oyster Case: 1926

The first waterproof watch case changed everything. In 1927, a young British swimmer named Mercedes Gleitze wore an Oyster across the English Channel. The watch emerged in perfect working condition after 10 hours in the water. The front page of the Daily Mail carried the story โ€” and Rolex mastered the art of the publicity stunt.

The Perpetual Movement: 1931

Rolex invented the first self-winding mechanism with a perpetual rotor, eliminating the need to manually wind the watch every day. This innovation became the foundation for every modern automatic watch.

The Submariner: 1953

Designed for professional divers, the Submariner was water-resistant to 100 meters and featured a rotating bezel for tracking elapsed dive time. It became the template for every dive watch that followed โ€” and arguably the most cloned watch in history.

The Daytona: 1963

Originally unpopular, the Cosmograph Daytona gained its legendary status slowly. After Paul Newman was photographed wearing one, the "Paul Newman Daytona" became the most sought-after vintage watch in the world. An original sold at Phillips auction in 2017 for $17.8 million.

The GMT-Master: Born for Pan Am

Commissioned by Pan American World Airways for their pilots, the GMT-Master featured a two-tone bezel and a fourth hand that tracked a second time zone. The "Pepsi" (blue-red) and "Batman" (blue-black) bezels are now cultural icons.

Why Rolex Dominates Super Clone Demand

Rolex's combination of iconic design, waiting lists that stretch for years, and prices that have doubled since 2020 makes it the most replicated brand in the world. At Clonicawatch, our Rolex collection uses 904L steel, ceramic bezels, and clone calibers that match the originals' specifications โ€” because the details are what make a Rolex a Rolex.
